The following is the Preamble to the South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs' Association Constitution:

Whereas, the communities from Brigantine through Cape May Point in New Jersey employ lifeguards during the summer months, and whereas the sizes, responsibilities, and activities of the beach patrol of these communities have increased to such an extent during recent years that an organization of some kind is necessary to coordinate common interests, we hereby do establish this Association.

The name of this organization shall be "South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs' Association."

The purpose of this organization shall be:

  • The exchange of ideas and information relating primarily to the ocean lifeguarding profession, and including its allied problems;
  • The development and promotion of rules, regulations, and ethical practices for conducting inter and intra-beach patrol races;
  • The development of a program to encourage continuous re-evaluation of techniques, equipment, and procedures for purposes of advancing the profession of ocean lifeguarding;
  • The dissemination of information though regular meetings and other available means;
  • The enlistment of the support of the administrative and executive officers of various communities, the public, and the media of communication in promoting the professional status of ocean lifeguarding;
  • To cooperate and support the activities of other organizations related to ocean lifeguarding and to public safety as consistent with the interests of this Association

The membership of this Association shall consist of the active head of the beach patrol of each community from Brigantine through Cape May Point in New Jersey. The head of the beach patrol may designate another representative of his organization to serve in his absence as a voting member of the Association. Each member shall have one vote.
